How to change your display name in Zoom

There is a way to adopt a temporary identity to be displayed in a Zoom room when you join a Zoom room. You can also change the default name that is automatically displayed whenever you join a Zoom meeting for any future Zoom meetings.

Examples:

  1. You find yourself on someone else’s computer, temporarily using their Zoom account to attend a meeting but want your name, not theirs, to appear under your image on the screen. In this case, you would use the temporary method which would last only through that meeting.
  2. If you were signed in on your own account and wished to change the default name to be different every time you joined a Zoom meeting from this point forward, you would need to edit your account in Zoom.

The handling for a one meeting change of name follows. At its end, will be a red bar like the one just below this paragraph signaling the start of the lesson. The Situation B handling will come after that second bar. You can read just the version you need, if you wish.

When you join a meeting in Zoom, If you hover your mouse over the picture you will see something like the below:

In the lower left is the name that owns the account that is logged in (outlined in green). At the top right is two selection options: (outlined in yellow). The blue box to the left gives your audio status, either Muted or Unmuted. If you click on it, you will toggle your status between Muted and Unmuted. There is a three dot menu box to the right of that which you can use to change the display name for this Zoom meeting.

Let’s say that I don’t want to appear in this meeting as “Frank Vedder” but want to use a different name for fun, a fake name, say, “Darth Vader”. I would want to click on that three dot menu to get the below choices:

The choice we want is the last one, “Rename. Click on it and a box will appear, allowing you to specify a different name:

Once you type in the name you wish, click on “Change” and you will see that name in the lower left corner, as below:

This will last throughout the meeting but will not be saved or reappear by itself again.

Here is the Situation B handling, changing your default Display Name.

Now, for example’s sake, say I’ve decided I want to use my middle name, James, instead of my first name, Frank. I want my default display name to be “James Vedder”. I must change my Zoom Account display name.

Open the Zoom app, there should be an icon on your screen, . and get the screen below. Your profile picture is to the top right and is outlined in red in the graphic below, click on it.

A drop down menu opens up. Click on “My Profile”, outlined in red, below.

On the next page that comes up, don’t sign in with your email. scroll down to see “Sign in with Google” outlined in purple, as shown below. Click on the Google symbol.

Enter your Google sign-in for our workplace as supplied by Last Pass.

You are signed into Zoom now, but on the Meetings page. You want to be on the Profile page. Its selection link is outlined in purple, just above “Meetings” on the left of the figure below. Click on it.

This gets you to the Profile page, and an option to edit your profile in the red circle below. Click on it:

If I save the below change I put in the red box area below, I’d be James Vedder by default, from now on in Zoom meetings. You can enter your desired display name, click “Save” in the blue box area and you have Your new default Display Name
